Studied all night for your exams but forgot everything after seeing the question paper? And the worst one, forgot to wish your friend on their birthday? Well, now don’t expect them to wish you even if they do remember. Anyway, to get over such confusing situations, you need to work on improving your memory and let’s read a few ways to improve memory
Be Attentive All Day Long
We tend to go with the flow during a lot of our daily routines. You are cooking and just within those two minutes, you forget whether you out the salt or not. You are all set to leave from home and within seconds of closing the door shut, you panic whether you took the keys or not.
To avoid all of this, you need to be attentive of every detail, push the other thought away. This is one of the most effective ways to improve memory.
Stop Multitasking and Focus Single Tasking
Now when I say put the other thoughts away, I mean stop thinking about all you have to do next. And don’t multitask, that can make a lot of important details go unnoticed which is not healthy.
You will constantly be worrying if you did this or not. So focus on one job and I feel like if you focus on one, you can do all of them faster than while multitasking.
Start Exercising To Improve Memory
Movement is something very important for hell a lot of purposes and keeping your memory sharp is one of those purposes. You need to get your blood flowing, heart pumping and your brain thinking constantly.
And for all of that, you need to move from the couch, get out and do something. If you are lazy or a couch potato, you tend to give less importance to any detail. You don’t think memorizing something is worth your energy.
Mind Games: Picture It In Your Head
You ever walk into a room and forget what you walked in for in the first place? And you just think for a minute and then come back and bam! It strikes back.
You can avoid this whole time-wasting process by imagining what you are going to do. If you want to get a pen from the room, imagine about it, make a mental picture and it will not go away when you walk in the room. When you want to remember something, picture it in your head, it’s that simple.
Work On Your Sleeping Pattern
Resting is just as important as moving. You need enough rest to keep your mind so that it doesn’t freak out when you are trying to recall something.
This tip is especially important for the people who are preparing for exams. Don’t keep working all the time, you need to stop when your brain gives you a hint that your saturation level for the day has crossed. Give it a rest and you’ll remember things better.
Regain Control of Your Mind When Stressed
This one is a real enemy of you. Stress causes so many problems and one of them is a bad memory. If you keep stressing over unimportant things, how will you remember important ones?
You need to take a deep breath and let it all go. Focus on the things that are important for you that’s going to help you in the long run.
Keep Your Reminders Handy
If remembering schedules is a problem for you then start putting reminders. It is possible that you fix an appointment a month later and you forget about itYou must put a reminder in your phone right away
The same goes for birthdays and any other important dates like that. You can also keep reminders if you want to change a habit like drinking water. Many of you out there forget to drink water while working, so use the reminders for that too.
Add Information To Improve Memory Retention
Every time you want to remember something, associate that particular thing to some other information. Like, if you want to remember a date, associate it with what happened that day.
When is your boss’s birthday? That day when she wore a saree for the first time, remember? Want to remember that chemical formula? Learn it’s meaning first, word to word.
Use Mnemonics To Improve Memory
Oh, this is my favorite. How many of you out there learned the rainbow colors through Vibgyor? This is called learning through acronyms.
Visualization is another mnemonic to help you remember things better. Picture it, like I said in one of the above points. Rhyming too helps to remember things. It is proper psychology research that rhymes help you remember better.
And last but not the least, chucking. To remember huge, long things or situations, you can break up these things into the main points and it will improve your memory.
Add These Foods To Your Diet
Yeah, those damned almonds for memory. They actually do work. And there are a lot of other types of food you can eat that will improve your memory.
Berries of any kind, blueberries, strawberries they all are great for memory. Then there is broccoli and cabbage and all those leafy veggies.
That Haldi doodh (milk with turmeric) that Indian parents make you drink when you’re unwell, the regular intake will improve your memory. And the best one is dark chocolate! Yes, I am not kidding!
A sharp memory can make you a really intelligent person, no kidding. You get a lot of respect when you are good at remembering things. This will make you a focused individual in life.
You don’t have to do all of these at once, take all of these one at a time and it will improve your memory. If you have more ways to improve memory, let me know in the comments below.
