Emotions are really funny, aren’t they? Sometimes they do things out of your control and you just don’t know how to keep them in check.
It is okay if this occurs once in a while but if you have a serious problem of not being able to control emotions and then end up being hurting or saying something you absolutely did not mean to.
So, I am going to list down a few simple things you need to keep in mind and practice in order to control your emotions effectively.
1. Know yourself
You need to sit and analyze yourself and your reactions. Know what exactly is it that annoys you or makes you go nuts in no time.
You should be aware of your possible reactions or emotions that will come out if you go down a certain path. Just sit back and think to yourself, think about those situations from the past and see what could have been different but wasn’t because of what you did or said.
Your opinion, how you see things is going to determine the flow of your emotions in any particular situation. There are always two ways you can take in on any situation, one is negative and two is positive.
But I am not going to tell you to always look at the positive side and always avoid the negative because sometimes vice versa is actually the right thing for you which is why you need to get your perspectives straight.
“Learn to discipline your emotions, because if you don’t your enemies will use them against you.”Bruce Lee
The negative thoughts in your head are making your heart go on an emotional roller-coaster ride. If your heart feels heavy because of a constantly recurring thought in your head, then that thought is toxic and you need to get rid of it.
You and only you can decide if you will laugh at a situation or cry and only you can control it when you willingly let go of the negativity making home in your head.
Like always positivity comes to the rescue. I told you to get rid of the negative thoughts but how exactly will you do that?
You will do that by distracting yourself with positive thoughts or positive activities. Even though you don’t feel like it, try and do something that generally makes you happy. Dancing, singing or painting, you choose. Being too positive too can sometimes cause overflow of emotions so keep a moderation.
Any sort of high intensity activity which can make you sweat also has the strong ability to make you happy.
If you haven’t noticed yet then start noticing right away that every time after a workout session, despite how tired you might be, you may still feel really lightheaded and ready to take over the world.
It is all hormonal game which you can use for the benefit of being able to control emotions.
Every time you feel that gush of emotions just rising up your throat and bursting out, just step back and take a deep breath.
A lot of people don’t believe that this little trick doesn’t work but it really does wonders if you give it a shot. Just take a deep breath and it will give you a couple of seconds to think and hold back whatever unnecessary emotion that was trying to come out without your permission.
7. Take space
Controlling emotions needs a sort of meditation. Firstly, you can’t do it with someone around for sure. Because the moment someone asks what happened, the first thing that happens is bursting out so you don’t want that.
You need to step back and take some space for yourself to think and realize that is whatever that situation is even worth your emotions and energy? If not then it will settle down on its own.
8. Avoid addiction
There are various ways of being able to control emotions and some of those ways are of course unorthodox but highly used because well, it helps.
Getting into some sort of addiction such as drinking or smoking which numb your brain cells right away is one of those unorthodox ways. But you must avoid getting into this and believe in yourself that you are strong to do this on your own.
These are those few basic things that you can do on a daily basis which will help you control your emotions effectively.
Although, you need to remember that nothing happens overnight. So have all the patience in the world because this is you working on yourself and there should be no shortcuts in that.
